Just a couple of notes from the Steelers' brief appearance in the latest episode of ‘Hard Knocks:’
• Interesting conversation between Joey Porter Jr. and secondary coach Grady Brown:
Brown: "We've gotta tighten up on the 'My bads.' Guys will own their mistakes, and that's critical. That's important. But, the mistake can't happen. You've got a blind confidence. You don't care who you've gotta cover. You don't care what the score is on the game. It's your time to lead this defense. It's your time to be the dude."
Porter: "I'm ready to be a new player when I come in. It's gonna be a whole different me in the classroom, on the field. I'm just ready to bring that to the team and do as much as I can to get this (championship)."
• In hosting his final team meeting, Mike Tomlin gave an "I don't have the words" speech:
"Good afternoon, men. I guess first is (I don't have the words) for me. I'm not going to pretend to be eloquent and have words for what we're doing right now, man. I don't. I never ever prepare for failure, to be quite honest with you. It's a waste of time. I know it hurts. It hurts for me. I assume it hurts for you. When I fail, man, I expect it to hurt. I'm okay with that component of it. But I can't hurt too long because then it jeopardizes what lies ahead. And so, as a leader, man, you have that commitment from me. I love what I do. I love who I do it with. I love where I do it. I'm a competitor. That's who I am. I'm comfortable with that. As painful as this failure is, man, I love this game, I love this business at this level. I do. I'm just wired like that. I'm thankful that I am. Man, I need this. It ain't always good, but man, it is me. I absolutely love it even when it's miserable, and I am comfortable saying that, even when it's miserable and it hurts. But other than that, man, in terms of this journey coming to a screeching halt, man, I don't have the words. I don't."
