Ranked 28th among teams in Major League Baseball in home runs with 76, and ahead of the Pirates’ 66, the White Sox took advantage of Bailey Falter’s recent struggles in giving up home runs by hitting two off him in the first four innings of tonight's game at PNC Park.
In Falter’s final two starts heading into the All-Star break, he gave up five home runs. To put his recent issues into perspective, over his 11 starts in May and June it was just four home runs that he allowed. Tonight, the long ball was a problem again as he gave up a first-inning shot to Edgar Quero and a solo homer to Luis Robert Jr. in the fourth.
Of Chicago’s 31 swings with Falter on the mound, they missed on six, fouled off 10, and put 15 into play -- six of which were hits. Falter has now given up 10 earned runs in his last three starts over just 14 1/3 innings.
"Just missed execution, honestly," Falter said of his rough outing. "Falling behind on counts, missing location."
